Lotus Cortina grid ready to take on Brands Hatch this weekend

Tuesday, August 20 2013

One of the highlights of this weekend's Lotus Festival at Brands Hatch (24/25 August) will be the Lotus Cortina Anniversary Race, celebrating 50 years of the iconic sports saloon.

Two races, each lasting 20 minutes, will feature a field exclusively made up of the 60s saloon racer. Raced in period by legendary drivers including Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Sir Jackie Stewart, it also propelled Sir John Whitmore and Jack Sears to touring car titles and both will be guests of honour at Brands Hatch this weekend.

The entry list for the Lotus Cortina Anniversary Race includes Henry Mann, whose father Alan entered the car that took Sir John Whitmore to the European Touring Car title in 1965. Henry will be taking to wheel of one of the red and gold-liveried saloons.

The Lotus Cortina also played a pivotal role in the fortunes of both Ford and Lotus, with the former gaining a reputation for sporting prowess and innovation. Meanwhile Colin Chapman's racing and sportscar business developed an engineering consultancy division and also produced further classics including the Sunbeam and Carlton.

The Lotus Cortina races will take place on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit and headlines a programme that includes the Lotus Cup UK and Lotus Cup Europe championships, plus the Elise Trophy series and a host of support races.

The Lotus Festival will also feature classic Formula 1 demonstrations, parades, club displays, trade stands, rally stage action, air displays and live music.

Tickets for the Lotus Festival at Brands Hatch on 24/25 August are available from £18 with free admission for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
