Jaafar wins tense British F3 opener from King at Brands Hatch

Saturday, August 10 2013

Jazeman Jaafar was victorious in the opening Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series race at Brands Hatch today (Saturday), winning a close contest from Jordan King and Antonio Giovinazzi.

Jaafar made a good start as King tucked in behind, however Will Buller made a blinding getaway to assume fourth place behind Giovinazzi into Paddock Hill bend. King tried to relieve the leader of his place along Cooper Straight but was ultimately unsuccessful.

Buller's start was, however, under investigation and he was given a drive-through penalty as he crossed the line to start lap four. Also in trouble at this stage was Sean Gelael, off the road at Stirlings.

Buller served his penalty at the end of lap five, rejoining in eighth place and ahead of the National Class battle, which was being fought by Sun Zheng and Cameron Twynham.

Meanwhile the lead battle had become a duel between the Carlin team mates Jaafar and King, with Giovinazzi a little further behind. However the gap between the podium hopefuls see-sawed throughout the half hour contest, with each driver gaining and losing time in equal measures.

Buller's progress also caught the attention as he caught the top seven, and took sixth from Felipe Guinmaraes on the penultimate lap at Paddock Hill.

There were to be no further changes in the order and Jaafar held on for the win from King and Giovinazzi, with Nicolas Latifi fourth from Jann Mardenborough, Buller and Guinmaraes. Tatiana Calderon headed the National Class, which was won by Zheng from Twynham.

Race two will take place tomorrow at 11am, with Calderon on pole position after eighth place was drawn for the reverse grid.
