Truck Racers get set for battle of Brands

Friday, April 19 2013

Drivers competing in the British Truck Racing Championship at Brands Hatch this weekend (20/21 April) took part in a practice session today (Friday) ahead of the second round of the season.

The first round has seen a new reverse grid system successfully implemented and the general verdict in the Paddock is that the races will be spectacular!

Former champion Dave Jenkins will be hoping to lead the title race tomorrow evening and is looking forward to the action. "The reverse grid format is very exciting for the crowds," he said. "It's very challenging for the drivers, so we're hoping now to get out if the weather stays fine for us this afternoon and that should put us in a good position ready for the fighting and racing tomorrow!

"Brands is exciting for overtaking, there is always an opportunity to squeeze past at Brands Hatch, at Pembury if we couldn't find one I think most people were making them. Not great for the painters and fibreglassers but good for the spectators!"

West Kingsdown's Division 2 challenger Steven Powell, who is also a former champion, said: "It's looking quite good, the trucks only just turned up, but it's been worked on a lot throughout the winter. We've got a lot of new trucks and old trucks, so it's all up in the air. We know tomorrow morning how competitive it is, so fingers crossed it'll be alright.

"They're going to do half a lap split between the Divisions and now with 15 laps they should be able to catch everyone, so it'll be good."

Division 1 leader Steve Thomas added: "At round one with the reverse grid people that started on pole didn't finish first and it was good racing, very close racing and hopefully at Brands Hatch it'll be even better because there will be more trucks.

"Hopefully if I can get a win, I was second here last year, and a third. I do want a win and if I can then we'll be pushing hard for two wins. We shall see tomorrow!"
