Summerfield takes opening day double at Brands Hatch

Saturday, April 20 2013

Matt Summerfield has taken a second British Truck Racing victory at Brands Hatch today (Saturday), taking the win from rival David Jenkins in the closing laps as the pair chased down Division 2 leader Dave Smith once more.

Chaos reigned on lap one as the Division 2 trucks tripped over each other, with Oscar Clark leading the field, but Jim Bennett took over on lap two. Smith was closing on them, meanwhile Jenkins and Stuart Oliver were disputing Division 1 and the privilege of chasing the slower trucks a few seconds up the road.

Smith asserted himself into the overall lead and duly scarpered away. However Jenkins was also alone and it was just a matter of how quickly he could clear the remainder of the Division 2 trucks. Just five laps was the answer and with a gap of under ten seconds, it was surely a matter of time before the race was decided.

However now Summerfield was past Oliver and set off in pursuit of his rival. As Jenkins closed on Smith, Summerfield loomed in their mirrors. Out of Graham Hill bend on lap 12, Jenkins took the lead and immediately lost it to Summerfield.

The pair raced together for the remaining laps but Jenkins was unable to launch an attack and behind, Steve Thomas passed Oliver and Smith for third place.

After the race Summerfield said: "That was extremely hard. I'm tired before the start of the weekend! I'm having to drive the absolute wheels off the truck."

The first of tomorrow's three races will take place at 12:45pm.
