Summerfield grabs Truck race one win on penultimate lap

Saturday, April 20 2013

Matt Summerfield took the first Truck race win of the weekend at Brands Hatch today (Saturday) after chasing down Division 2 leader Dave Smith in the final laps.

Brian Burt lead Smith at the start as David Jenkins and Summerfield dropped Division one leader Richard Collett. Luke Taylor ran wide at Graham Hill as at the front, Smith took the lead. As Jenkins and Summerfield squabbled over Division 1, Smith began to scarper from the rest, led by Burt.

It took five laps for the first of the slower trucks to be despatched by the Division 1 leaders. Jenkins and Summerfield swapped positions as they passed the Divison 2 backmarkers, closely followed by Collett and Steve Thomas.

By lap nine Summerfield was into second but was 14 seconds in arrears to Smith, who had made a clean break. The difference in lap times was 2 seconds and with around six laps remaining a grandstand finish was in prospect as Summerfield was free, four seconds clear of Jenkins, Thomas, Collett and Stuart Oliver.

Summerfield's pace was good enough to catch the leader however and as the minutes ticked away, the gap visibly closed. On the penultimate lap Smith was baulked by backmarkers at Druids and Summerfield, more assertive in the traffic, forced his way past out of Graham Hill bend.

The margin of victory was 2.277 seconds, with Thomas beating Jenkins to third place, whilst Collett took fifth from Oliver and Cees Zandbergen. "It was hard work," said Summerfield. "I thought I was going to be in a groove behind Dave! It's good to come through the Division 2 trucks, it must be fabulous for the crowd. We use the Division 2 guys as pawns really!"

Race two will take place at 15:10 today.
