Derani heads Fortec 1-2 in F3 race two at Brands Hatch

Sunday, June 24 2012

Fortec drivers Pipo Derani and Felix Serralles scored a 1-2 finish in the second Cooper Tires British F3 International Series race at Brands Hatch this weekend. The team mates were never more than a second apart, after Double R drivers Fahmi Ilyas and Geoff Uhrhane were unable to convert their front row starts into victory. Pietro Fantin was Carlin's highest-placed driver, with Carlos Sainz Jr scoring the most points of the title contenders.

Ilyas made a good start from pole, unlike his Double R team mate, but really impressing off the grid were Serralles and Jazeman Jaafar, third and sixth respectively at the end of lap one, whilst Uhrhane fell to ninth.

Sainz Jr lined up an early attack on Pietro Fantin, which left the leading trio of Ilyas, Derani and Seralles to break away, whilst Jaafar began to latch onto the battle for fourth place, and not far behind were Nick McBride, Harry Tincknell, Alex Lynn and Jack Harvey.

On lap five, Ilyas blotted his copybook by running wide at Paddock Hill, dropping to fifth place, between Sainz and Jaafar, whilst things were even worse for Tincknell, a broken front wing sending him towards the pitlane.

Serralles launched his attack on Derani in the lead, whilst Sainz and Fantin kept close company, with Ilyas holding back the rest. As the Fortec team mates disputed the lead, Fantin and Sainz worked together, bringing them closer to the front.

Further back, Ilyas and Jaafar were lapping faster than the following pack and this gave the championship leader added impetus to attack for fifth place. The top four were now virtually nose-to-tail but the Fortec team mates stayed calm, whilst Fantin was given warnings for not respecting track limits. Sure enough, Derani did enough to take the win from Serralles, with Fantin third. Sainz dropped back a little, but was a long way ahead of polesitter Ilyas, who survived pressure from Jaafar, McBride, Lynn, Harvey and Hannes Van Asseldonk.

The final F3 race will take place at 16:35 and Jack Harvey will start from pole position.
