Two-time champion Jason Plato joins MG for BTCC 2012

Wednesday, January 25 2012

Two-time Dunlop MSA British Touring Car champion Jason Plato has announced he will make a dramatic switch to Triple Eight Race Engineering, who will run brand new MG6 GT cars in 2012.

The Chinese-owned manufacturer has announced a three year programme in the series and will partner all time top BTCC race winner Plato with Andy Neate, who has driven for Team AON and West Surrey Racing for the past two seasons.

The squad will race under the MG KX Momentum Racing pseudonym and to NGTC specifications using the ubiquitous TOCA engine. The deal marks the return of the famous British marque as a works outfit in the series for the first time since 2003.

Triple Eight are famed for their huge success with Vauxhall as a factory outfit in the late 1990's to 2008, securing over 100 wins, while Plato bring a wealth of experience from Renault, Vauxhall, SEAT and Chevrolet.

Speaking to Autosport, the Englishman said; "It's really exciting to be involved in a brand-new all-British team and it's just brilliant that the iconic name of MG will be back on track. It's going to be fantastic and it's great for British motorsport."

MG Motor's sales and marketing director Guy Jones was equally enthused: "We are delighted the new MG6 will be seen by millions of fans in Britain and beyond. This continues the famous sporting lineage of the brand."

BTCC Series Director Alan Gow is delighted to welcome another new manufacturer to the series: "MG is one of motoring's truly evocative names so its BTCC campaign will, I'm sure, really capture the public's imagination. This high-profile return to the forefront of competition in the BTCC is also certain to prove highly effective in terms of marketing for MG and all of its partners, as well as delivering some great results for them on the track."

Plato will make his debut with MG and Triple Eight on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit on 30 March - 1 April, while also visiting Oulton Park, Snetterton and the Brands Hatch GP circuit in 2012. For more information and to book tickets call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
