Coulthard returns to DTM with brand new Mercedes racer

Wednesday, February 29 2012

Former Grand Prix winner and BBC Formula 1 commentator David Coulthard will return to the DTM in 2012, Mercedes-Benz have confirmed today (Wednesday). The 40-year old Scot remains with Mücke Motorsport and will drive a brand new Mercedes AMG C-Coupé at every round, including Brands Hatch on 18-20 May.

Coulthard, the winner of 13 Grands Prix, will be competing in his third season in the German-based touring car series. Despite contesting his first two years in older machinery, he has scored points in both seasons and will now graduate to a contemporary car.

The DTM has undergone a revolution for the 2012 season, with brand new cars, including a return for BMW. Both Mercedes-Benz and Audi have taken the opportunity to switch from saloons to coupé body styles and new rules have been designed to increase competition.

"I'm delighted to remain part of the DTM," said David. "I've always had an eye on this championship, even when I was in Formula 1. I've not been disappointed by the challenge behind the wheel, it's competitive like you can't believe in terms of how close the laps times are.

"I'm really looking forward to this new challenge with the new cars and I'm proud to still be a part of the Mercedes-Benz team - it's absolutely in my heart. My first impressions of our DTM Mercedes AMG C Coupé are very positive - especially the paddle shift on the steering wheel, which I know very well from my time in Formula One. To have three premium manufacturers involved in this championship - this is more than you have in Formula 1 now."

"David Coulthard is one of the best-known and most popular drivers in the DTM," added Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Vice-President Norbert Haug. "He has played a prominent role in Mercedes-Benz motorsport history since winning the first race with the then brand-new McLaren Mercedes Silver Arrow in the 1997 Australian Grand Prix. In 2012, David Coulthard will be contesting his third DTM season, and this time he has set his sights even higher. Last year, there were several races in which David was amongst the very fastest in the field over the entire distance. As soon as David can turn this speed into better grid positions and quicker starts, he will be a real contender. And this is our shared goal for 2012."

David has also taken some time to explain the rule changes in the DTM for 2012, which can be seen in the video clip below:
