Brands Hatch winner Zanardi nominated for Laureus Award

Double Gold Medal-winning Paralympian and racing driver Alex Zanardi has been nominated for a Laureus Award for his performance at Brands Hatch in the London 2012 Games.

Zanardi has been nominated for the Disability Sportsperson of the Year in The Laureus Awards, which is the sporting world's most prestigious prize.

The popular Italian achieved his first ever victories at Brands Hatch in the Handcycle category, winning first the time trial on the opening day of the events (5 September), before surging ahead in the road race to take a second Gold. Silver in the Men's Relay event completed an historic week for the former Formula 1 driver and double Champ Car Champion.

Zanardi is nominated alongside Britain's David Weir, as well as Patrick Anderson, Johanna Benson, Daniel De Faria Dias and Alan Fonteles Oliveria. The Italian also joins F1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel and Olympians Usain Bolt, Bradley Wiggins, Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis on the prestigious list of nominees.

The Laureus World Sports Awards winners are voted by the Laureus World Sports Academy, formed from 46 of the greatest sportsmen and sportswomen of all time, and the winners will be unveiled at a globally televised awards ceremony staged in Rio de Janeiro on March 11th 2013.
