Smith claims Truck Division 2 pole at Brands Hatch

Saturday, April 21 2012

David Smith has taken pole position in Division 2 ahead of this weekend's Delphi British Truck Racing Championship at Brands Hatch, beating rival Oly Janes to the place.

Smith was quick again in qualifying, setting the immediate pace from Janes by more than two seconds, but the Division 2 leader was clawing back time as the session evolved. Keen to hold off the challenge, Smith went very wide at Paddock Hill but managed to recover his Foden from the gravel.

In third place at this stage, John Powell was putting in a good showing in his first year of competition, leading Steven Taylor and Paul Clark.

Smith was trying very hard to beat his own time, despite being a second clear of the rest but his attempts were spectacular to witness. Both he and Janes backed off with a couple of minutes remaining but whilst Smith was getting ready for one last effort, his chief rival retired from the battle, satisfied with his pace.

On the final lap, no improvements were forthcoming, and so Smith claimed pole position from Janes, with Powell and Taylor on row two. Clark will line up alongside Marco Donk, with Adam Bint, Brian Burt and Frans Smit completing the line up.

Qualifying for the Division 1 trucks will take place at 12:45.
