Smith eases to first Truck victory of the day at Brands Hatch

Sunday, April 22 2012

Dave Smith took a comfortable win in the first Delphi British Truck Racing Championship race at Brands Hatch today (Sunday), for Division 2 machines. Meanwhile a thrilling performance from Brian Burt saw him take third place, after a late challenge to runner-up John Powell.

Smith made a textbook start after the pace truck pulled into the pitlane, to maintain an early lead from Oly Janes and John Powell. He then proceeded to pull away from the chasing Janes, the only man to get close to the Tonbridge man's pace.

Back in fifth, Burt survived a sideways moment out of Graham Hill bend but had the attentions of Marco Donk and Paul Clark into Surtees. As Frans Smit demoted Adam Bint to last place, Burt gathered his composure and set off after Steven Taylor in fourth place.

Pulling up to Taylor's truck Burt lined up his challenge and attacked at Druids, but a poor exit gave the place back to Taylor. As he continued the chase, the pair started to reel in Powell.  Late on in the race Burt repeated his move at Druids and a more cautious exit ran Taylor wide and secured the overtake.

Burt then set about applying pressure to Powell but with little of the race left, only a late lunge at Clearways last time round would be feasible. Powell, however was a little too far ahead and assumed his normal line at the corner, meaning he held onto the place to the flag. He completed a podium that saw Smith take the win from Janes, the pair over ten seconds ahead.

Behind Taylor, Donk took sixth from Clark, Bint and Smit. The Division 1 race takes place at 11:10.
