Hotly-tipped karting star gains race licence with Brands Hatch and Club MSV

Thursday, April 12 2012

Brands Hatch has launched the career of another future motorsport star with double junior karting champion Toby Sowery ready to switch to car racing after completing his Junior ARDS test at the circuit.

The 15-year-old highly rated racer from Cambridgeshire has already grabbed the attention of former Toleman F1 boss Alex Hawkridge, who gave multiple champion Ayrton Senna his first drive in the pinnacle of motor racing, and championship winning British Formula Ford squad Jamun Racing.

The young driver, who aims to reach Formula One via the FIA Formula Two Championship, passed his Junior ARDS with Club MSV at Brands Hatch last month and is now hoping to make the step up to car racing next season. Passing a Junior ARDS Test is a requirement for every young driver who wishes to gain a MSA National B race licence. The test comprises a theory and practical exam covering all aspects of race craft, racing regulations and procedures.

Sowery, sponsored by Liberty Mutual Insurance, completed the rare feat of claiming the Ginetta Super One Junior TKM Championship, along with the Easykart UK title last season, and off the back of that he showed impressive pace during a test with Jamun Racing.

He said: "As a kid I've always wanted to drive and I started karting at the age of eight. We had a good season last year and like every young driver I want to reach Formula One, that is my aspiration. The whole ARDS experience was a brilliant one, the instructor was really kind and the car was great to drive.

"Jamun Racing seemed to be pretty impressed with me when I did the test considering it was the first gearbox car I'd driven. I hope to begin testing single-seaters towards the end of the year with the view to stepping up next season."

Sowery aims to add another karting title to his name in the Rotax Super One championship this season before he takes the plunge into car racing.

For drivers hoping to make the step up to car racing, Club MSV offer a Junior ARDS course priced at £600. For more information click here.
