Brands Hatch Paralympic tickets now on sale

Friday, September 09 2011

Tickets for the 2012 Paralympic Games go on sale today, and the list of events includes road cycling at Brands Hatch from 5-8 September. Buyers have until 18:00 on 26 September to register their ticket applications for next summer's big sporting event.

London celebrated the countdown to the event with a special Paralympic day in Trafalgar Square yesterday (Thursday). Prime Minister David Cameron and London Mayor Boris Johnson joined the public for a display of paralympic sports, which thrilled the crowd. An official invitation to athletes across the world to compete was issued, and Lord Coe expressed his wish to see full stadia for the Games.

However the athletes hoping to compete in next year's events at Brands Hatch were unable to attend, for many of them were taking part in the Para-Cycling Road World Championships at Roskilde in Denmark. The prestigious event serves as a guide to form at the Paralympics, with competitors fighting for glory on a world stage.

In yesterday's opener, there were good results for Great Britain. Mark Lee Colbourne was second in the men's C1 time trial and Shaun McKeown third in the C3 class. There was even better news from the women's events, as Sarah Storey won the C5 time trial. Karen Darke was third in H2, whilst Gold Medallist and twice World Champion Rachel Morris finished fourth in H3. The various classes range from handcycling to tandems for visually impaired competitors.

Yesterday's events took in just one loop of the 15.2 kilometre course, with many of today's trials taking in a second lap, before the road races commence on Saturday. British hopes remain high for success, an important marker on the road to Brands Hatch in 2012.
