Jonathan Palmer pays tribute to Dan Wheldon

Monday, October 17 2011

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dan Wheldon following the awful crash that took place during yesterday's Las Vegas Indycar event. Whilst Dan's greatest achievements came on the other side of the Atlantic, his early career was forged in the highly competitive kart circuits and race tracks of the UK, and he had many friends throughout the motorsport community here.

Dan's first steps in car racing took place in the Formula Vauxhall Junior and Formula Ford championships, which included races at our Brands Hatch, Oulton Park and Snetterton circuits. His tragic death coincided with the 40th running of the famous Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch, where he finished second to Jenson Button thirteen years ago. Dan was also a race school instructor at the Kent circuit in the late 1990s, and became a popular member of the team before he made the switch to the United States where his career truly flourished.

Dan's outstanding achievements, including two victories in the Indianapolis 500 and winning the Indycar championship in 2005, ensure he will always be remembered as one of his generation's finest motor racing talents. Our deepest condolences are offered to his wife Susie, children Sebastian and Oliver and to all of his family and friends at this difficult time.
