David Coulthard pays a flying visit to a Club MSV Trackday

Thursday, May 19 2011

BBC commentator and ex-F1 driver David Coulthard visited a Club MSV car trackday at Brands Hatch this week, to discover how accessible it is to get a foot in the door in motorsport.

The Scotsman, 40, filmed a feature for the BBC's F1 coverage, which will be aired during the European Grand Prix, to promote National Motorsport Week on 25 June - 3 July.

National Motorsport Week is an initiative from the MIA and MSA to encourage newcomers to the sport, whether they are drivers, spectators, engineers or marshals, something which Coulthard supports.

"Britain is the centre of the universe of motorsport. There is so much history and heritage here and success with British engineers and design and racing drivers and all the rest of it and we need to keep feeding that" said Coulthard.

"This (National Motorsport Week) creates a very accessible opportunity for people to go into racing which in the past wasn't there. Typically motorsport was an expensive pastime and I think this (a car trackday) makes it a very affordable opportunity."

Coulthard, Britain's all time top F1 points-scorer, was impressed with the Trackday Taster Session initiative from Club MSV, which offers novice drivers the chance to enjoy 20 minutes on circuit for just £25: "I think it's a great initiative to get people out on track and into motorsport" he said.

"Anyone that thinks they are Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton or Jenson Button can take their own car out on track and find out if they have driving talent or not. The road is not the place to do that, but the race track is, and for £25 you can do that at the MSV circuits.

"I would never have thought you could do this. I literally could have driven down here in my M Class or my GL Mercedes, paid my money, put my crash helmet on and driven that car around the race track. If you're a fan of motorsport you get to drive iconic race tracks like Brands Hatch, the home of the European and British Grand Prix in the past, and you can find out if you actually have car control and put your money where your mouth is."

Coulthard also took to the track in a Porsche 944 that has been purchased and prepared for trackdays by the Club MSV team, as part of a project to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of trackdays. The progress of 'project Porsche' has received regular coverage in Track Driver magazine. "The Porsche is very well engineered I can tell you! It's not 'move over Sebastian Vettel' fast but it is a race-prepped machine, stripped out and with a roll cage in and I think it highlights how accessible it is to be out on the racing track."

Alex Baker, Club MSV Manager and co-owner of the Porsche, said: "It was great that David could come and visit us at Brands Hatch. Many people don't realise that you can get out on the circuit from just £25, but the piece on the BBC as part of the National Motorsport Week should encourage more drivers and riders to come and give it a go. Having him test drive the 'project Porsche' on circuit was just the icing on the cake!"
