Jenkins holds off charging Collett to win opening truck race

Sunday, March 27 2011

David Jenkins secured the win in the opening truck race of the day, holding off a charging Richard Collett in the closing laps to secure the championship lead after the first points race of the season.

Jenkins started on pole after yesterday's qualifying race, but it was Collett who made the better start and challenged into Paddock Hill Bend. Collett's ambitious move at Paddock Hill meant he lost momentum going up Hailwood Hill and was passed briefly by Cees Zandbergen into Druids before fighting back into second at Graham Hill Bend.

Further back, David Smith, who started sixth, ran wide at Graham Hill Bend, forcing him down the order, and Adam Bint had an excursion at Paddock Hill but was just able to dig himself out of trouble.

Collett's scrap with Zandbergen allowed Jenkins to power away at the front, holding a lead of 1.3 seconds at the end of the first lap although Collett halved the gap at the end of lap two.

Collett though was struggling with what was later revealed to be a broken splitter, and was without top gear during the opening stages.

With those issues hampering Collett, Jenkins stretched the lead back to 1.3 seconds at the end of the third lap, before further extending the lead to 1.6 seconds by the end of lap seven.

However on lap eight Jenkins was held up by lapped traffic, and suddenly the lead was down to less than half-a-second. Collett was able to attempt a move into Druids, but Jenkins held on around the outside of the hairpin and kept hold of the lead into Graham Hill Bend.

Jenkins was able to stretch the lead out to a second in the remaining laps and held on to take the championship lead. Leading Class B driver Cees Zandbergen secured an overall podium finish in third place.

West Kingsdown driver Steven Powell was forced out of the race after six laps, with Carl Brookfield also failing to finish.

The next Delphi British Truck Racing Association race takes place at 14.45pm.
