David Jenkins takes pole position for British Truck Racing Championship season opener

Saturday, March 26 2011

David Jenkins converted his free practice pace into a convincing pole position for the opening round of the Delphi British Truck Racing Championship at Brands Hatch today (Saturday), following a qualifying battle with rival Ricky Collett.

Jenkins maintained a confident attitude throughout the 20 minute session, setting a benchmark time on his first flying lap which ultimately proved unbeatable. However, as in warm up, Collett was close on his heels - securing a front-row start just three tenths adrift of his sparring partner.

Cees Zandbergen replicated his form in free practice to secure third on the grid for this weekend's opening encounter, whilst Luke Taylor demonstrated a remarkable improvement in pace to haul his Renault machine into fourth on his final flying lap.

Andy Lovenberry's Sisu qualified fifth quickest, ahead of Kent duo David Smith from Tonbridge and West Kingsdown's Steven Powell.

Another local talent, Oscar Clarke from West Kingsdown, secured ninth behind Carl Brookfield's ERF.

Championship newcomer Adam Bint ran wide on the inside at Paddock Hill Bend in the latter stages of the session. He struggled to get sufficient traction on the grass run-off area to rejoin the track in his Volvo White, although he was eventually able to return to the session and rounded out the top ten.

Qualifying was stopped after just two minutes when Jim Bennett's Seddon Atkinson spun into the gravel at Paddock Hill Bend - before the Bungay racer even had chance to set a lap time.

Once the session restarted, Oly Janes also had a brief excursion through the same gravel trap but managed to steer his SCANIA P Series back onto the circuit. Janes finished fifteenth overall.

The opening race of the 2011 British Truck Racing Championship will take place at 4.15pm today (Saturday), followed by three races on Sunday.
