Dartford racer eager for British Touring Car debut at home circuit

Friday, March 25 2011

Local fans will have plenty to cheer about at Brands Hatch next weekend (2/3 April), when Dartford racer Tony Gilham makes his debut in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.

Gilham, who is a former cage fighter, has raced in a number of UK club series including the Volkswagen Racing Cup and Porsche Carrera Cup GB. However his graduation to the UK's most popular car racing championship in a Triple Eight-run Vauxhall Vectra marks the biggest moment in his motorsport career.

Where many may find it daunting, though, Gilham is looking forward to the close, fierce racing that has become a hallmark of the BTCC.

"After spending three years in a Porsche, it's going to be interesting to see what Brands Hatch feels like in a Touring Car, said Gilham. "You've always got to be expecting some rough and tumble in the BTCC, and you've got to be up for a bit of a challenge. You have to be sensible but fight your own corner; it's all about controlled aggression.

Gilham is also looking forward to the strong local support he will receive in his distinctively coloured green and pink liveried Vectra, which was unveiled earlier this week.

"We will have a lot of local support from friends, family and hopefully some new fans, as we try and do a lot to keep the fans interested," he added. "I hope everyone likes the new colour scheme as well, as it stands out a bit! I can't wait to get to my local circuit, the atmosphere is always great.

As a demonstration of appreciation to his motorsport fans, Gilham has also announced that he will be giving away his BTCC car at the end of the season to one lucky member of his 'Tony Gilham Fanzone' membership scheme, available through his official website.

Brands Hatch will host free practice and qualifying from the British Touring Car Championship on Saturday, before three races including a reverse grid for the final event on Sunday.

Tickets for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch on 2/3 April are available from £25 for adults, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click on the link below.
