Airwaves Racing conduct first shakedown of new cars at Brands Hatch

Tuesday, February 15 2011

Wrotham based British Touring Car team Airwaves Racing this week conducted the first shakedown test of their new Ford Focus ST cars that they will use in the 2011 BTCC season.

Despite tricky weather conditions, the team were able to get some useful mileage on the ex-Team AON cars, decked in a distinctive red and yellow livery, around the 1.198 mile Brands Hatch Indy circuit.

Lead driver Mat Jackson, who stays with the team for a second season, along with newcomer Liam Griffin, was pleased with the progress made on the first day of running with the car.

"It's been an interesting first run and a good first shakedown" said the Henley-in-Arden man.

"The weather has obviously not been ideal, it's pretty cold and now it's starting to rain, but at least we're going to get to try it in both conditions, but the first day is nothing more than a shakedown really just to iron out any problems with the car and to see how we go."

The team will remain at Brands Hatch tomorrow, and will be hoping for drier weather.

"Testing is going to be very much weather dependant, at the moment it's too wet to be running on slicks so it's a moving playing field really but tomorrow hopefully the weather will be dry and we can get some more testing in" Jackson added.

The 29-year-old, who is a veteran of rear wheel drive cars, having driven BMW machinery in the BTCC for much of his career, sparing a year with Chevrolet in 2009, is unperturbed by moving to the front wheel drive Focuses.

"Front wheel drive is a completely different characteristic, and it's a different way of driving and a different style, but the initial thought is that the car feels good, and Mountune have got a great engine in it and it's down to us to work on the chassis."

The 2011 British Touring Car season starts at Brands Hatch on 2-3 April. Tickets are on sale now priced from £25 with free admission for children aged 12 and under. For more information or to book tickets call 0843 453 9000 or click the link below.
