Baz blasts to the top in final seconds

Sunday, April 24 2011

Loris Baz put in a stunning last lap in the dying seconds of the final free practice session at Brands Hatch this morning to topple Ryuichi Kiyonari from the top of the times to put the Motorpoint Yamaha fastest ahead of this afternoon's qualifying shootout.

Kiyonari led the session until the closing moments when Baz set the fastest lap with a time of 45.530s, just 0.084s ahead of the defending champion. Kiyonari had come under fire from John Hopkins earlier in the session as he closed in with a lap to move second fastest with ten minutes on the clock, but in a frantic final ten minutes it was Baz who stole the advantage as Hopkins and Samsung Crescent Racing ended fourth when Michael Laverty moved up the order in the closing minutes.

Shane 'Shakey' Byrne had a steady start to his session on the second HM Plant Honda but when the time ticked down the former double champion moved up to fifth ahead of Jon Kirkham who had run as high as third in the early stages.

Tommy Hill who had been the pacesetter yesterday was seventh fastest on the second Swan Yamaha ahead of Josh Brookes who was moving up the order with Tommy Bridewell and Michael Rutter on the Rapid Solicitors-Bathams Ducati completing the top ten.

Glen Richards led the Mirror.co.uk BSB Evo contenders in 16th, just ahead of his team-mate Alex Lowes.
