David Jenkins takes sensational Class A Truck victory

Sunday, October 31 2010

David Jenkins steered his Sisu to a surprise victory in the opening Class A encounter of the Delphi British Truck Racing Championship at Brands Hatch on Sunday, after front row starters Chris Levett and Stuart Oliver clashed on the opening lap.

The race was divided into two parts after the red flags were brought out after just two laps. Pole-sitter Chris Levett's Freightliner led the pack into Paddock Hill Bend for the first time with Stuart Oliver's MAN alongside, before contact between the pair pitched Levett's truck into the gravel. Although the race continued under yellow flags initially, Ricky Collett then went of the circuit at Druids, which led to the race being stopped.

Collett's MAN was allowed to rejoin the grid but Levett did not take the restart after his Freightliner sustained damage. This left Oliver with sole occupancy of the front row as Jenkins, Collett and the MAN of Matt Summerfield squabbled behind him for the remaining podium positions.

Jenkins made a flying start, passing Collett on the run into Paddock to take second place before setting his sights on leader Oliver. After a couple of thwarted attempts, Jenkins completed a sensational pass for the lead down the inside through Surtees, before building a comfortable gap over the remaining seven laps.

Oliver held onto a solid second place ahead of the battling trio of Summerfield, Collett and Dutch driver Cees Zandbergen. Summerfield emerged victorious from a vibrant tussle for third with Collett in the early stages, before a charging Zandbergen passed Collett to secure fourth.

Roger Brookfield took sixth ahead of quickest Class B competitor Graham Powell in seventh. Guest racer Henrik Antoin Tijhuis was classified eighth after being penalised following the race for not respecting the track limits, whilst Steven Powell's Ford Cargo and Carl Brookfield's ERF rounded out the top ten.

All Class A drivers plus the top 11 Class B competitors will compete in a Grand Final event at 2pm.
