Football champions Bordeaux sign up for Superleague Formula

Friday, March 19 2010

French football champions FC Girondins de Bordeaux have announced that they will be vying for a four wheel title in 2010 after signing up for Superleague Formula by Sonangol.

The six times French Ligue 1 winners will have a leading home-grown driver spearheading their maiden campaign, as former Formula One driver Franck Montagny will race Bordeaux's V12 750bhp Superleague single seater.

Montagny's F1 career included stints with the Renault, Toyota and Super Aguri teams, and the Frenchman is now part of Peugeot's Le Mans 24 hours sportscar programme.

The new squad will be run by experienced race team Barazi-Epsilon, who ran Montagny in Formula Nissan - now known as World Series by Renault - in 2001.

"I'm delighted and I can't wait to participate in this championship, especially with its expanded calendar and continued growth," said Montagny. "Superleague Formula will allow me to meet some old friends from F1 and other categories again."

Superleague Formula president Alex Andreu added: "I am proud to be able to reveal that the French Champions will join Superleague Formula this year with a driver of the talent of Franck Montagny, who has shone in many disciplines. After only two years of existence, this shows the growing interest of the Superleague Formula concept from the most reputed football clubs at the international level."

Bordeaux is the second French football team to sign up for Superleague Formula this season, as Olympique Lyonnais has already confirmed it will contest the series in 2010.

The Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit will host Superleague Formula for the first time on 31 July/1 August. Tickets are now on sale from £24 for adults, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0870 950 9000 or click on the link below.
