Audi to return to BTCC with Rob Austin Racing

Monday, December 13 2010

The Audi name will return to the British Touring Car grid in 2011 after Rob Austin Racing announced they will field two Audi A4 cars built to the NGTC specifications - the first time the Audi name will appear in the series since 1998.

GPR Motorsport have been commissioned to build two cars for the team, which runs cars successfully in the Ginetta G20 and G50 cups, Historic Formula One and the GT4 class of the British GT Championship.

"This is a great step for us and a fantastic challenge" said team principal Austin.

"We are convinced the NGTC concept is going to make the BTCC even more competitive and exciting and that the Audi will be a race winner."

GPR are also building the new Toyota Avensis cars upon which the NGTC concept has been based for fellow newcomers Speedworks and Dynojet.

BTCC Series Director Alan Gow commended the latest addition to the series; "Our NGTC regulations are clearly proving highly popular, with three new teams now having announced plans to come into the BTCC because of them. The Audi name is synonymous with touring car racing so, while an independent entry, it will be terrific to see its badge return to our paddock."

The news that Audi will return to the grid means the 2011 line up promises to be among the most diverse in recent BTCC history, with nine manufacturers expected to be represented.

The new era of the BTCC kicks off at Brands Hatch on 2-3 April. Admission tickets are available at 2010 prices if booked before Christmas. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click the link below.
