Bruno Spengler storms to DTM glory at the Nürburgring

Monday, August 09 2010

Canadian Bruno Spengler has extended his DTM German Touring Car Championship lead after a dominant lights-to-flag victory at the Nürburgring last Sunday (8 August).

The Mercedes driver snatched the lead from his Audi rival Mattias Ekstrom off the start line, which pushed Ekstrom wide and dropped him down to seventh position on the opening lap.

Ekstrom's misfortune allowed the Mercedes C Class of Briton Paul di Resta through into second position. Di Resta kept pace with Spengler for the first part of the race, but dropped back slightly after the mandatory pit stop to allow his Canadian compatriot a comfortable victory.

"My start was mega," said Spengler. "Afterwards, it was my target to move away as quickly as possible and that was what I did. However, it was quite difficult, as there were a few drops of rain. I thank my team for their great job. We will now focus on the six races which are still ahead of us."

Timo Scheider was the main Audi hope at the Nürburgring after charging from eighth to fourth on lap one, behind the third place Mercedes of Jamie Green.

Unfortunately, a challenge on Green delayed the pair, which Kent driver Gary Paffett capitalised on to snatch fourth position. Green was then demoted to fifth after a slow pit stop meant both Paffett and Scheider jumped past him on their return to the track.

Green fended off a late charge from Mercedes' Ralf Schumacher in sixth place, whilst Ekstrom crossed the line in a lonely seventh after failing to recover from his first lap drama.

Mercedes also snatched the final Nürburgring point on offer after Maro Engel emerged victorious from a tense battle with the Audi of Mike Rockenfeller to clinch eighth position. Former F1 driver Mercedes David Coulthard rounded out the top ten.

As a result of the all-Mercedes podium, Spengler has extended his championship lead over Jamie Green to 16 points. Paffett is now tied in third place with Di Resta, just one point behind Green in second.
