South East stars gear up for Grand Prix circuit showdown

Wednesday, April 21 2010

A host of racing talents from the South East will take to the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit this May Bank Holiday weekend (1/2 May) for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship and its support races.

From teenage talent in the Ginetta Junior Championship to a points leading BTCC team, representatives from Kent, Essex and Surrey will be among the leading contenders for victory at their home round.

Kent's Airwaves BMW leads BTCC standings
With a workshop based just down the road from Brands Hatch in Wrotham, Airwaves BMW will literally be on home turf this Bank Holiday weekend.

The squad has grown in strength and success over the past few seasons under the leadership of Team Principal David Bartrum and the team will be running an impressive eight cars at Brands Hatch next weekend.

In the British Touring Car Championship, Airwaves BMW currently leads the team standings after drivers Steven Kane and Mat Jackson scored an impressive 1-2 finish in the opening round at Thruxton.

Bartrum's squad also leads the points table for the Porsche Carrera Cup, a support race for the BTCC. In 2010 they are running an unprecedented six cars in the series, with top driver Michael Caine currently second in the standings.

Reigate's Tom Chilton ready for victory
25-year-old Tom Chilton is one of the most colourful characters in the BTCC paddock, known for his exuberant personality and driving style. In fact, during the winter Tom was seen chasing ladies rather than cars when he appeared on the ITV dating show 'Take Me Out'!

Last year, Chilton became a key part of Team Aon's ambitious project to run a pair of Ford Focus STs in the BTCC.

After a huge amount of development, the Reigate racer missed out on clinching the team's first victory in the 2009 season finale at Brands Hatch when Jason Plato's Chevrolet out-dragged him to the line by 0.015s - the closest finish in British Touring Car history!

Thurrock team AmD Milltek to debut VW Golf at home circuit
Former Brands Hatch instructor Shaun Hollamby and his Thurrock-based AmD Milltek Racing team made history in 2010 when they brought the Volkswagen Golf back into the BTCC after an absence of more than twenty years.

Although Hollamby considers this season a learning year as the team works on increasing the car's performance, the Golf has already attracted a cult following among BTCC fans. The AmD Milltek garage was almost as packed as that of former champions Fabrizio Giovanardi and Jason Plato during the autograph session at the season opener!

Goudhurst's Jake Hill aiming to extend Ginetta Junior lead
Jake Hill is one of Kent's rising stars and the 16-year-old currently leads the standings in the Ginetta Junior Championship, a BTCC support series for 14-17 year olds, after clinching victory in the season opener.

Jake only learnt to drive a car in late 2008, but two weeks later he had led a race and scored his first podium finish in the Ginetta Junior Winter Series.

2010 is his second year in the main Ginetta Junior Championship, following a strong first campaign in 2009 when he took five pole positions, five podium finishes and three wins - including a dominant double victory on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit at the 2009 season finale.
