Jason Plato leads BTCC charge to Brands Hatch

Monday, April 26 2010

After securing the Chevrolet Cruze's first victory last weekend, Jason Plato leads the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship charge as the series heads to the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit this weekend (1/2 May) - the scene of Plato's sensational treble victory at the 2009 season finale.

Fans' favourite Plato became only the second driver in BTCC history to win all three races in one day when the 2009 championship reached a thrilling climax on the Grand Prix circuit last October.

The Silverline Chevrolet driver out-dragged Tom Chilton's Ford Focus across the line by a miniscule 0.015s in race one, as well as performing a sensational move round the outside of Colin Turkington's Team RAC BMW through Paddock in the final outing of the season.

Plato's trio of wins was not enough to wrestle the 2009 title from Turkington, however, but the Oxfordshire racer has the points advantage in 2010 ahead of the BTCC's return to Brands Hatch this Bank Holiday weekend after scoring the first series victory for the Chevrolet Cruze last time out at Rockingham.

Hot on Plato's heels in the title fight is Honda Racing's Matt Neal, who clinched two commanding victories for the Honda Civic at Rockingham last weekend, whilst his team-mate Gordon Shedden is also a potential race winner at Brands Hatch after scoring his first podium of the season.

There will be plenty of support for local team Airwaves BMW, who are based just down the road from Brands Hatch in Wrotham and currently lead the team standings. The squad had a perfect start to 2010 when new line-up Steven Kane and Mat Jackson scored a 1-2 finish in the season opener at Thruxton, which Kane followed up with a double podium finish last weekend.

Other contenders for victory on the Grand Prix circuit this weekend include Team Aon Ford Focus duo Tom Chilton and Tom Onslow-Cole, WSR BMW racer Rob Collard and popular Merseyside driver Paul O'Neill in his Sunshine.co.uk-backed Honda Integra.

As well as a trio of BTCC races, Brands Hatch will feature support action from Formula Renault UK, the Ginetta Junior Championship, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB, the Renault Clio Cup and the Ginetta G50 Cup.

Plus there will be a packed programme of entertainment away from the track including a free of charge pit lane walkabout on Sunday and children's activities including mini quad bikes and face painting at the new Brands Hatch 'Fun Zone'.

Discounted tickets are available from £24 for adults online or by phone until midday Wednesday - saving you up to £12 on the gate price - with free entry for children aged 12 and under.
